The accidental mastermind behind this gathering, painter Bart Rouwenhorst, happens to be a blonde without a speck of ginger in his hair. Inspired by artists who famously painted red-haired women such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Gustav Klimt, Rouwenhorst put an ad in the newspaper asking for 15 natural redheaded women to model for him in More than women called.

The mocking can be endless, and calls of 'ginger' across the play ground may still haunt us today. So, if you, or any of your friends are of a fire-headed disposition, then this calls for a celebration. The idea of the national day is to empower man and women with red hair, and to encourage them to accept and embrace their individuality. It was started in by sisters Adrienne and Stephanie Vendetti, co-founders of the website How to be a Redhead, as a response to hateful days such as 'Kick a Ginger Day'.

As many as 5, redheads from around the globe descended on the city of Breda for a three-day festival celebrating the genetic trait. The event started on Friday 5 September and included a range of activities from photoshoots to art exhibitions, a film night and lectures on the history of red hair. Thousands of redheads flooded Breda in the south of the Netherlands, roaming the historical city to visit tourist sites, dine at local cafes and visit special workshops and even a fashion show laid on by the event. The pictures were displayed in the Grote Kerk church.
Redheads are celebrated around the world today. Red is the rarest hair color, with only 2 percent of the world's population having it. Most redheads are of northern or western European ancestry; the highest percentage of redheads come from Scotland, followed by Ireland.
